Under Construction: New Barnes House Carriage House, Falmouth, VA
This historic house was once the caretaker’s cottage for Belmont, the home of painter Gari Melchers which sits on a hill across the street. The cottage has been stabilized by the owner, builder Jay Holloway of Habalis Construction, giving us time to design a modest addition so that the structure can be brought back to life. A carriage house with an apartment on the upper level will be built behind the house as part of the rehabilitation work, and a future single family residence has also been planned. All proposed work had to be approved by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources which holds easements on the property.
