The main requirement for this 3,200 sq. ft. residence was to capture sunlight and views. Built on a gently sloping meadow surrounded by large trees on all sides and a pond in the distance, the long east-west form orients living spaces to the south and more private sleeping rooms to the north. Energy efficiency and sustainable materials are also important to the client, who requested the exterior walls be built from insulating concrete forms and that air-sealing and mechanical systems were highly efficient. The simple gable form of the roof allows overhangs and trellises protect south-facing windows from summer heat, with large brackets supporting overhangs on the gable ends as well. Between the horizontal lines of the stone base and roof cornice, wood siding and shingles form gabled bays projecting from a band of stucco cladding. Inside, openings in thick exterior walls are wood, with custom designed casings and trim throughout.
